Bontuku recordings
Didnt see this anywhere else, apologies if this is already a thread
Here's what I have in the way of recorded Bontuku-
Nature's Table-8/9/86 Sets I+II (2 CDs off of cassettes)
Nature's Table-9/5/86 set I (1 CD from cassette)
Bontuku white Album (1CD from my LP)
What else is there? I'd love to add to my meager collection after all these years. I was at other shows for sure.
I also have the following post-original Bontuku recordings-
Wachamba-undated practice at parkland 1987 (1 CD from cassette)
Wachamba-Opportunity House 1/13/87 (1 CD from cassette)
the All-new Bontuku-Nature's Table 1/30/87 (1 CD from cassette)
Bontuku/Wachamba practice-Parkland College 2/4/87 (1.5 CD from cassette)
Wachamba-Nature's Table 5/20/87 sets I+II (2 CDs from cassettes)
and finally-
Oscar Sully-Jemelatu (1 CD from LP)
Oscar Sulley in collaboration with Korean orchestra-Friends
all of my stuff is available to any.

I think Mouse is the keeper of the old Bontuku bootlegs.
I have the 8/6 material courtesy of Kutzko but would love a copy of the 9/5 material.
Can do send me your address and I'll send you one off.
I'd love to hear any bootlegs from the old band in 1986. I should also listen the the 1/30/87 show just to see if it's as awful as I remember it (see Wachamba and the New Bontuku). There's more info about recordings in the White Album thread.

I have 3 videos.
1) Interview with Oscar for Parkland TV (cable access back then), about 30 minutes long. Includes snippets of a formal interview with Oscar, and clips of the Wachamba band at a Parkland performance in late '86 or early 1987 (most likely).
2) The raw footage of the gig in the interview mentioned above. This features Wachamba, Peter Roubal, an unknown drummer, and the sax player that knew Adrian Belew. You get to see Oscar turn around and signal us to stop playing so loudly while he tries to solo on his bamboo flute. This happened several times...Ah, inexperience ("You mean, these volume knobs can function on a setting other than 10?").
3) Wachamba/New Bontuku playing an African cultural event at the Urbana Civic Center, sometime 1987. Features the same lineup as mentioned above, but the band's a little more polished. The event was a dinner/dance; I remember a couple of "real" Africans doing some serious dancing in front of us after they'd moved a couple tables out of the way.
If there's any interest, I'd be happy to get a copy to anybody who wants one. I still only have the original VHS, don't have the technology to convert it to DVD.
Just popped in the VHS tape. The lineup for the Urbana Civic Center gig is different:
Oscar (with brekete)
Moody
Steve Balderson - Percussion
Sean Kutzko - Rhythm Guitar
Brad Fish - Lead Guitar
Ralph Brown - Guitar
Doug Berkman - Bass
Dave Tcheng - Keys
Unknown drummer (Kelly??)
William Janssen - Sax
John Janowiak - Trombone
Judging by the overall sound of the ensemble, the clotihng worn (a couple of flannel shirts) and the length of my hair, I'd say it was late March - early April 1987.
The jacket for the video also has a date for "Oscar and Scott Mordecai drumming at Parkland - August 26, 1986. However, the interview clearly shows an early form of Wachamba, with Kelly (??) on drums and Peter Roubal and William on saxes. I'd guess February 1987.
Sean & Doug,
Suffice it to say, I'd be interested in any audio or video materials that include me, be they New or Classic Bontuku.
I think I remember the Urbana Civic Center gig. Outdoors, no?
John, I'll send you all the CDs by week's end. I'll get the VHS's from Sean and put them on DVD and get them to you in a while. Jeff I'll send you the sept. CD when I have your address.
Awesome.... thanks!
Doug came down this weekend so we could rehearse our acoustic duet. While here, we broke out the Oscar video.
The interview with Oscar for Parkland TV is about 15 mnutes long. He talks about his uncle teaching him how to play drums, his timer at the prison in Joliet, and his general teaching philosophy. With all the stuff we all had to deal with regarding "cow," I think it's easy to forget just how big of a heart Oscar had. He seems very modest and gracious about teaching. "The student is a part of me." It just reinforced how much I learned from him, and how much I owe him for my continued interest in playing music, no matter what level I'm playing at.
I gave Doug the master VHS tape; He'll be transferring it to DVD as his time allows and then get it out to whoever needs/wants it. Hit Doug up for more info or to request it.
Sean
